Announcements & News

A Chairde,

Happy New Years to all of you! I am pleased to step into the role of Chair for our Cooley-Keegan branch of Comhaltas. I would first of all like to thank Josephine Brennan for her many years of service. Among other accomplishments, she spearheaded successful fundraisers, raised awareness of our Comhaltas movement within our community, and most of all chaired the CEE Convention Planning Committee from 2017 to its conclusion in 2022. A huge thank you to Josephine for all her efforts and support of our branch!

I have been a set dancer for many years, following in the footsteps of my parents, Harold and Cathy Jones. I also attend the monthly Irish singing sessions held on the first Friday of each month. I was the volunteer coordinator for the 2022 Convention in April, a position that made me aware of just how many dedicated people work to keep the branch running smoothly and successfully.

In 2022, the pandemic continued to put a damper on in person activities this year, but we have enjoyed outdoor dances in San Francisco and Oakland. The monthly singing sessions continued on Zoom. Since the fall, in addition to Comhaltas sponsored events, we have community events which we are happy to promote. These include set dancing at the Plough and the Stars on Thursday nights and in San Anselmo on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month. The singing sessions are back in person, with the option of joining on Zoom. We had 15 participants live at our recent event!

The Board is starting to plan events for 2023. We will have a St. Brigid’s Day ceili on Sunday, February 5th and another dance in April. March will see us participating in the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Numerous people have expressed their desire to see more young adults join our activities. The big question is “How?!” Where do we advertise? What do we need—classes, pop ups?

The Board invites input from all members on these and any other issues. All members are invited to attend our monthly Members’ Meeting. To request to be added to the Zoom link for the meetings, please contact our secretary, Patricia Reilly.

I am excited about the opportunity to serve as Board chair and look forward to working with as many of you as possible in the months ahead.

Mallen Scholarship - Application Form - The Mallen Scholarship was established through the generosity of Kevin Mallen, an enthusiastic supporter of Comhaltas during his lifetime. The purpose of the scholarship is to support students learning to play traditional Irish music. Mr. Mallen’s generous bequest to our Branch allows us to fund this scholarship in his name. Apply by March 19th for consideration.

The application for a scholarship award is open to any Cooley-Keegan member up to and including age 16. Applicant must be a junior member in good standing of the Cooley-Keegan Branch of Comhaltas.
